911 Center Crippled by a Lightning Strike

Irontontribune.com reported that a lightning strike on Thursday June 23rd, significantly damaged the Lawrence count's 911 center. All emergency calls were immediately transferred to Gallia County operation. The 911 dispatch system, the alarm system and radios were reported damaged amounting to financial losses much more than $15,000.00. AT&T representatives and maintenance personnel expect to take several weeks before 100% operation strength can be regained.

Lightning - an act of mother nature can be very unpredictable and can cause severe damage to people and electronic equipment. People are advised to take care even when indoors as lightning currents can travel long distances and can enter houses through water pipes and gas pipes. Lightning currents are very easily induced in power and communication cables and cause major damages if electrical grounding and surge protection products have not been installed appropriately.

Our advice to the maintenance personnel at 911 centers is to follow the grounding system maintenance check list provided by Motorola R56 and ensure that a low resistance single point grounding system is in place along with an appropriately designed internal grounding system. Motorola R56 along with IEEE 1100 (Emeral Book) also provide appropriate guidance on selection of power line and data line surge protection devices and their appropriate installation. Appropriate shielding, grounding  and surge protection are the best measures a communication site can take to minimize it's downtime during lightning strikes.
