National Lightning Safety Awareness Week June 19-24

Lightning is a big spark...static electricity on a giant scale as stated by the NWS Lightning Safety.

In light of the National Lightning Safety Awareness Week we took the liberty to research on the some myths and beliefs where we found NWS article History and Mystry of Lightning stated that early Greeks believed that lightning was a weapon of Zeus.

Thunderbolts were invented by Minerva the goddess of wisdom. Since lightning was a manifestation of the gods, any spot struck by lightning was regarded as sacred. Greek and Roman temples often were erected at these sites, where the gods were worshiped in an attempt to appease them. The Moslems also attributed lightning and thunder to their god. The Koran says "He it is who showeth you lightning and launches the thunderbolts." Scandinavian mythology alludes to Thor, the thunderer, who was the foe of all demons. Thor tossed lightning bolts at his enemies. Thor also gave us Thurs-day. In the pantheistic Hindu religion, Indra was the god of heaven, lightning, rain, storms and thunder. The Maruts used the thunderbolts as weapons. Umpundulo is the lightning bird-god of the Bantu tribesmen in Africa. Even today their medicine men go out in storms and bid the lightning to strike far away.

While "When Thunder Roars stay Indoors" is a great safety measure, there are some electrical safety measures that people must take while they are indoors. Lightning events generate very strong electrical and magnetic fields in the space between earth and clouds. All conductive surfaces can have induced charges, especially water pipes, gas pipes, internet cable, electrical cables, cable TV cables. So while indoors it is also suggested that:
1. Keep the doors and windows closed and stay away from them
2. Do not take bath and try to minimize the use of water till the storm goes away
3. Keep the electrical appliances like TV and computers switched off, do not unplug the devices during the storm

To make sure that your electrical appliances will be protected from lightning induced surges and the chances that the lightning current does not enter through water pipes, gas pipes, power or communication cables, it is recommended that a power quality specialist be consulted who can visit and confirm if the pipes and cables are grounded to a good single point grounding system before they enter the house and all the power distribution, power and communication outlets have UL listed good quality surge protection devices properly installed.

The Nation Weather Service provides more material for indoor and outdoor lightning safety.
